Best Free AAC Apps in 2026: A Parent's Honest Guide
Finding the right AAC app for your non-verbal child shouldn't require a second mortgage or a six-month waiting list. As a parent of a non-verbal autistic daughter, I spent months researching every option out there before deciding to build one myself. Here's what I learned along the way.
What to look for in an AAC app
Before jumping into specific apps, here's what actually matters when you're choosing one for your family. The app needs to be simple enough that your child can use it independently, but flexible enough to grow with them. It should work offline, because communication doesn't stop when the WiFi does. And it needs to run on the devices you already own.
The main options available today
Proloquo2Go is the most widely recommended AAC app by speech therapists. It's incredibly feature-rich, with thousands of symbols, core word support, and deep customization. The downside is that it's iOS-only and costs around $250 as a one-time purchase. For many families, that price combined with the complexity of setup means you'll likely need help from an SLP to get started.
Avaz AAC works on both iOS and Android and offers a subscription model. It has over 40,000 symbols and supports multiple languages. There's a limited free version, though the full experience requires a paid subscription. The interface is well-designed and the language development approach is research-backed.
TouchChat is another popular choice, especially in school settings. It offers strong vocabulary customization and multiple page sets. Like Proloquo2Go, it's positioned as a professional-grade tool, which means it's powerful but can feel overwhelming for parents who just want to get started quickly.
LetMeTalk is a free option that's been around for a while. It's basic but functional, using ARASAAC symbols. The interface feels dated compared to newer apps, but the price is right for families on a tight budget.
Talkr AAC is a newer app built by a parent (full disclosure: that's me). It focuses on simplicity and accessibility. Tap a picture, hear the word, build sentences. It comes with 3,400+ illustrations, works offline, and syncs across devices. The free tier includes 10 boards and 100 words with no time limit, which is enough for meaningful daily communication. Available on both iOS and Android.
Free vs. paid: what actually matters
The AAC industry has traditionally been expensive. Dedicated devices cost thousands. Premium apps cost hundreds. But communication is a fundamental right, not a luxury feature.
Several apps now offer generous free tiers that let families start communicating immediately while they wait for assessments, funding, or formal recommendations from their SLP. If you're in that waiting period right now, don't wait. Download a free option today and start building your child's communication skills. You can always transition to a different app later.
Which app should you choose?
It depends on your situation. If you have an iPad and access to an SLP who can help with setup, Proloquo2Go is the industry standard for a reason. If you need something that works on Android and iOS without professional help to get started, look at Avaz or Talkr. If budget is the primary concern, LetMeTalk and Talkr's free tiers give you real functionality at zero cost.
The best AAC app is the one your child will actually use. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Start with something free, learn what works for your family, and upgrade when you're ready.
Getting started
Whatever app you choose, here are three tips that made a big difference for us:
Start with a small vocabulary. Ten to twenty words that matter most in your child's daily life. "More", "stop", "eat", "play", "help" will get you further than hundreds of rarely-used words.
Keep the device accessible at all times. Communication isn't something that happens during therapy sessions. It happens at breakfast, in the car, and at bedtime.
Model the app yourself. Use it to "talk" to your child. Show them that this is how we communicate now, together.
